Sustainable living in Valencia pt.3: GETTING AROUND

… you want to get around Valencia but don’t know any other options other than by car?
… you are overwhelmed and confused by the variety of transport options Valencia offers?
… you just want to know how to get from A to B the quickest without hassle?

Let me help you out... You might think twice before you get in your car or order a taxi next time 😉

FIRST OF ALL:
WHY SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT ?

There are basically 4 major issues with using private combustion engine cars to get around:
  1. Huge amount of carbon emissions (kg CO2 per person per km)

  2. Local noise and air pollution (e.g. fine dust PM10/PM2.5, NOx & SOx)

  3. Traffic congestion (driving & parking space per person)

  4. Cost (total cost of ownership: car, fuel, insurance, tax, repair & maintenance, parking, garage, toll,...)

I think all of the above are well known and I don’t have to get into details. We definitely need better solutions than getting in a self-owned 5 seater car (or worse even an SUV) alone e.g. just to commute to work daily or go to the beach! So here are all the solutions I found available here in Valencia - sorted by what you want to do and including all new mobility services. For your convenience I have rated them all in the above 4 categories from 1-5 stars. Plus, at the end I will recommend you an all-in-one-App to make your city mobility super easy!

As an introduction here is a quick overview of the most common modes of transport and how they rank regarding CO2 emissions per person per km: You can see the differences and the impact on the environment is huge!

CO2 emissions from passenger transport (EEA)

Valencia offers a huge amount of different mobility options (and not all typical metropolitan new mobility types are even covered yet). This picture below e.g. just covers some eScooter & bike sharing options - not even showing public transport.

Now let’s look into the various options for Valencia, find the best and most sustainable one - depending on what you are up to…

GET AROUND THE CITY OR NEARBY
(e.g. to beaches)

1 - WALKING:
The oldest and most sustainable way - plus you get some sun,  ‘fresh’ air and a little workout. There’s sidewalks, parks and even nice alleys to walk between palm trees right in the city center. Valencia is one of the most walkable cities I have experienced - use this opportunity!

2 - BICYCLE:
After walking the second most sustainable option. And recently the city government has improved the bike lanes a lot, so you can get almost everywhere within the city only on bike lanes. (I made it almost all the way to the Valencia Exhibition center in Paterna, practically exclusively on decent & new bike lanes!) Here I would include skateboards, inline skaters, manual kick-scooters, etc. as well - everything that you move with your own muscles…

2.1 self-owned bike: if you live here and you commute a lot, it might make sense to get your own bike - plus a big and secure lock 😉

2.2 bike sharing: my absolute favorite to get around! There are VALENBISI stations within a shorts walk reach everywhere in the city. You register once (weekly / annual subscription fee) and can use it whenever and wherever you want - for free: 30min are included! So if you switch bikes at a station, you can basically drive as long as you want. Else you pay a little fee per minute of usage. You might want to bring your helmet along. Just keep in mind that yes it’s very easy that they wait for you at the station, but they often get driven around the whole city to other stations by (not electric) vans just for your convenience...
See the app recommendation below to find the nearest stations, route planning and availability of bikes / free slots.

VALENBISI
Annual Subscription 29,21€
Weekly Subscription 13,30€

following 30 min  1,04€
after the first 60min  2,08€/hour

I actually don’t recommend any of them but rather an overall App (see below at the end of this article)

And if you’re outside in a city nearby then MIBISI offers various bike sharing solutions. And if you are a MIBISI member you can join VALENBISI for only 25€/year. Find the MIBISI options here: MIBISI

2.3 rental bike: if you’re here for only a few days and can’t get registered for VALENBISI or just need it for a day, you will find plenty of locations for bike rental. Especially around the center, Turia Park and Ruzafa.

Usual Cost per hour: 2-5€

3 - ELECTRIC KICK-SCOOTERS:
You will see plenty around the city. They are mostly privately owned - the typical scooter sharing services are not allowed (anymore / yet). But as you can / must use the bike lanes, it’s quite easy to get around the city quickly. Yes, they run on electricity, but its emissions then depend on how you source your electricity at home. Unfortunately the production and supply chain for the lithium-ion batteries is very intransparent, so the production process for a scooter can be quite polluting too.

I try myself on a summary about the local rules for eScooters, but check this news article for all the details:
  • usage mainly like bicycles
  • bell & helmets not required, but recommended
  • max. 20km/h
  • on bus or bike-lanes & streets with speed limit of 30km/h & residential streets: max. 20km/h
  • on marked bike lanes on sidewalks: max.15km/h
  • pedestrian zones & parks: max.10km/h
  • sidewalks: forbidden
  • max.1 person
  • penalties from 100€ to 500€ when not following the regulations

3.1  self-owned e kick scooter: you can buy them starting around 300€, which might make sense if you use them a lot.

Price: 250-600€ (example for most famous MI scooter: see here on Amazon.es)

3.2 e-kick scooter sharing: not available anymore in the city (for now). Will update if it returns. The only area where you can still rent & park e-kickscooters is in the harbor area, offered by LIME. This will get you around the harbor & beach area, but you always have to drop the scooters within this zone again.

3.3 rental e kick scooter: like with bicycles you can simply rent a scooter whenever you need it only for a short amount of time or if you want to try it first. Many places rent them nowadays in the city center, often the same ones that rent bicycles too - they’re just more expensive.

Usual Cost per hour: 6-10€
... per half-day: 20€

4 - ELECTRIC SCOOTERS:
The big brothers and sisters of the little e kick scooters have flooded the city recently. For a good reason! They are my second favorite alternative to get around every once in a while when walking is not an option. They help especially if you’re 2 people or if you have e.g. some groceries to carry. As the weather is mostly amazing here, it’s a great and fun experience to silently roam the city on one of these. Same issues regarding sustainability of production and electricity as described above for the little e kick scooters.

4.1 own electric scooter: get one if you need go longer distances in the city or outside or have things to carry things more often. Also as a couple you can easily share one and even ride together. If you don’t have garage, there’s usually plenty of space and dedicated parking spots around for scooters and motorbikes.

Price: from 1.300€ - 6.500€ (example for the famous NIU scooter: see here on Amazon.es)

4.2 electric scooter sharing: there are plenty of different providers all offering pretty much the same: easy to use electric scooters. I am registered for pretty much all of them and if you would like to read an in-depth comparison of the various services, please let me know in the comments below. They are super easy to register (CreditCard & ID Verification within app), to use (just locate in the app, reserve and pick up), widely available at almost every corner of the city and comparably cheap - especially if you use the vouchers below for free minutes and starting cash! Plus you can always get more minutes for your money if you buy packages in advance.
Check also my app recommendation below to find the closest one nearby.

4.3 rental electric scooter: I know specifically of one company that gives you access to electric scooters on a monthly basis for a fixed price. If you also find other offers, please add in the comments below. Very convenient if you want to try eScooters out or only spend a few months here in the city. But it is actually more of a monthly flatrate for their free floating scooter sharing service. I don’t think you can have YOUR scooter always available for you.

5 - PUBLIC TRANSPORT:
Of course there is also a decent public transport in place in Valencia. And most of all it’s comparably cheap! It consists of EMT Busses and the metro. Both together cover the whole city all the way to the beach and even little villages outside of the city and of course the airport. Sadly they haven’t reached the 21st century yet: no in-app ticket purchase possible and the schedules and routing in the app don’t work very well unfortunately... But with the Mobilis Card you can pay for all of them and even use Valenbisi.

The busses cover the whole city center and are decent to get around with. As there are mostly dedicated bus lanes you get around quickly and mostly on time. From an eco perspective most busses run unfortunately on an old and smelly diesel engine. But the overall CO2 & pollution per person per km is still far better than your own car (unless it’s electric). The metro is can be your choice for longer journeys or e.g. to outskirts and airport. Most likely you’ll end up with a combination of both - but that can also be compared in my favourite app at the end of this article…

Public Transport (Metro / EMT)

Cost direct journey 1,50€
Cost 10 bus rides incl. connections 8,50€

6 - CAR:
The mode that should be avoided whenever possible. Of course it has its benefits of convenience, private space, transport of goods and pets or for groups. But as you have seen all the other options above, you may now find better ways to get from A to B in Valencia instead of the old school car.

6.1 own car: well, if you own a car already maybe it’s time to reconsider and recalculate if you really need it or if you may use more sustainable modes of transport.

> When might you need a car still?
  • If you got dogs or other pets that aren’t allowed on public transport
  • when you are a family and need to transport children, buggy and stuff
  • when you live or go often outside of the city where there’s no public transport anymore
> What can you do to minimize its environmental impact?
  • Use it as little as possible
  • Do carpooling (e.g. to work)
  • Do ride sharing (e.g. longer trips, see „BlaBlaCar“ below: 9.1 - ride sharing)
  • Share it with others (e.g. see “drivy” below: 9.2 - P2P car sharing)
  • Drive a small car with small engine
  • Drive a hybrid / modern combustion engine with reduced emissions
  • Drive an electric car
  • Compensate all your CO2 driving emissions

6.2 taxi / ride hailing: sometimes you just need to get form A to B without a return trip, or you have to transport something heavy/big, or you are a group of people, or there’s no sharing or public transport nearby - or you’re drunk ;) so get a taxi or hail a ride. But even here you can easily make sure you get a more sustainable eco taxi. They are mostly hybrids, or even fully electric if you’re lucky. Here are Promo-Codes for both services, so you can save quite some money on your first rides!

I found two apps very helpful for that:

Cabify  iOS | Android ] is carbon neutral! They compensate all occurring emissions and are also generally more focused on sustainable solutions.
Promo-Code: julians1641“ (for 3 rides get 3€ each for FREE!)

FreeNow iOS | Android ] (former MyTaxi) at least offers you to chose an EcoTaxi.
Promo-Code: julian.sti“ (get 10€ for your first ride for FREE!)

(There’s no UBER in Valencia, but as it is the most famous and works in other Spanish cities e.g. in Madrid, I’ll drop this promo code as well, so it might help you some other time on a journey: “frpmd” for 5€ discount on first 2 journeys!)

6.3 car sharing: to make it short - there’s unfortunately no (electric) car sharing service in Valencia (yet). For now you can enjoy the good weather with some scooter sharing instead.

… all further car-related options see below in the next chapter.

(I have not included conventional scooters or motorcycles here as they are not really a sustainable alternative. Their footprint is in the range of a passenger car with 2 persons or flying by airplane.)

Now let's have a look at how to get around when leaving the city of Valencia behind...

GET AROUND SPAIN OR EUROPE

7 - TRAINS:
The most sustainable way for longer distance trips is usually by train or long distance coach - depending on the source you ask and on the county you travel through. To not get lost in the details and every last gram of CO2 calculation methods, let’s make it short: take a bus or train instead of a car or a flight!

Not even to mention how much more relaxed and easy it is to sit / lay on a train and see the countryside go by and starting / ending right at the city center instead of the hassle to reach the airport, waiting times, security controls, no leg space and waiting for your luggage… I personally love taking trains and it’s quite easy here in Spain, but also in other countries when booking online. Why would you still hop on a short distance flight e.g. to Madrid, Portugal, the north of Spain or France?

And even for long distance trips through Europe the impact is still huge:

For example if I compare the CO2 emissions for a trip I recently took back home to Germany by train (30 kg) to a car with 2 passengers (121 kg) or to a flight (122 kg), it becomes very clear. (calculated via ecopassenger.org)

Unfortunately the ticket price is at least equal or often even more expensive than a (mostly shorter) flight. But you can reduce that e.g. by using an InterRail ticket to travel through Spain (as a foreigner) or even Europe. And if you see the train journey as the beginning of the vacation while relaxing there alone or with friends - then travel time also is not an issue anymore :) Or you can also use the time efficiently to get some work done, if you happen to be on a business trip. And if you want to reach your destination literally at an blink of an eye, just look for night trains to fall asleep and open your eyes at your destination…

Here are some links that make travelling by train even easier:

renfe.es - the official website of the Spanish rail company RENFE.
Seat61.com - an amazing website for everything related to train travel worldwide.

Rail Planner (for InterRail) [ iOS | Android ]- an App that helps you plan your trains across Europe.

Loco2iOS | Android- an App that lets you plan and book trains all across Europe.

8 - LONG-DISTANCE COACHES:The other eco-friendly way to get around on longer distances. And it’s usually much cheaper than trains and flights! Check the App recommendations at the end of this article to compare prices between the different modes of transport. Usually around Valencia ALSA or FLIXBUS are the most common providers of these busses. Especially over night they can be a great alternative to trains, which usually don’t run at night.

FLIXBUS iOS | Androidwww ] - I prefer Flixbus as with 1 click you can even compensate your (already little) CO2 emissions completely for little money - which is at least better than not compensating at all.

9 - CARS:
As mentioned before travelling alone or with one passenger by car should be avoided whenever possible.  The more people, the better the emissions per km per person. If you pack a car with 4-5 people you might even beat the emissions of a (half-full) long-distance coach… But that doesn’t mean that you need to own a car. If you should need a car for a longer trip you can either join a driver that already goes where you want to go or take other people along (=ride sharing). Or you rent a car from private persons, that don’t need their car during that time. (=peer2peer "P2P“ car sharing) - you increase the utilisation of a car that already exists and help someone else to make a little money from it. Or you go the classical way of a rental car. Here you might even have the chance to get an electric car or at least a hybrid or modern fuel efficient car.

9.1 ride sharing: The most famous platform for ride sharing within Spain and Europe is „BlaBlaCar“. I really enjoyed my trips to the north Atlantic coast of Spain or even through France. You only use the car someone would take anyways and help reduce their emissions. You don’t add another additional vehicle on the road and you get to know new people and may have interesting conversations along the way! As these routes are more individual you might also save some time and surely money compared to trains or busses that usually only connect bigger cities. Give it a try! It’s not like UBER where the driver makes money from it, but rather reduces his own cost as you help them with their running cost for fuel, insurance, maintenance, etc…

BlaBlaCar iOS | Androidwww ]: share your ride or hitch a ride with others.

9.2 P2P car sharing: this is basically like rental car - but instead of new fleet vehicles and rental companies involved (that try to rip you off with e.g. additional insurances), you instead book from people that don’t use their car these days. Insurance is all included like with a rental car. You also have the chance to drive more classical or exotic cars, that rental companies wouldn’t provide. Of course only round trips work, as you’ll have to give the car back where you took it from.

DrivyiOS | Androidwww ]: the app to rent someone’s car or rent out your car for a hourly/daily fee incl. insurance.

9.3 rental car: The classical way to get a car when you need one. Usually quite pricey, but you get the chance to pick it up e.g. at the airport or train stations and do one-way tours - plus you have a chance to get an electric car or at least a hybrid or modern fuel efficient car. Just get the smallest one for your needs if you want avoid unnecessary emissions.

I also have found three providers that actually rent out electrical cars:

SIXT: BMW i3 (upon request)
RentLuxCars: Tesla Model S / 3 / X

10 - BY BOAT: Enjoy this experience on the sea! Why always travel over land or in the air? Especially from Valencia to the Balearic Islands ferries are a real and more sustainable alternative. You can even reach France or South-Spain that way. (But don’t think about taking your car along…) Or if you want to make it more of an adventure and you like it a bit more special and unpredictable, why not trying to take a sailing vessel?

10.1 Foot Passenger Ferries: There are several ferries companies going e.g. to Mallorca, Menorca or Ibiza. For all the ferry connections, checking prices and booking tickets, check out this app or several websites online.

10.3 Sailing Vessels: This is obviously the oldest and most sustainable way of travelling over water - only with the power of the wind. If you have ever sailed before, you may know the extraordinary feeling of gliding over water in complete silence...

That said, I do not expect most of us to have a sailing yacht in the harbour of Valencia though. But others do! Book a trip to the Balearic Islands or day-tours or join someone on a trip along the coast instead of jumping on an airplane for a short trip nearby.

There are several sites to either charter a boat (if you got the licence or a skipper - and the pocket money), join a boat (pay per day / week and sail with other people) or even sail for free by helping on board (e.g. deck hand, nanny, cook, skipper, etc…).

Let me know in the comments if you would like to know more about sailing and some website recommendations.

11 - FLIGHT: You have checked and compared all possible options and flying is the only viable option left? Here some ideas…

> What you might consider to avoid flying:
  • check all the other alternatives mentioned above to get to your destination
  • consider a different destination (e.g. for vacation) - Spain / Europe have a huge variety of cultures & landscapes within short reach.
  • rather have a longer trip than only a short-trip. So the time for train / bus / BlaBlaCar / Ferry / Sailing relatively is a smaller part of your overall trip and might make more sense.
  • for business trips: telephone / video conference instead of a meeting.
  • maybe do only one leg of the trip by plane but take some more time e.g. on the way back via train / bus / BlaBlaCar / etc…
> What you might consider to reduce your environmental impact if you HAVE to take a flight:
  • Prioritize long distance over short distance for fewer emissions / km / person.
  • Take a direct flight. Most emissions are happening during start & landing phase.
  • Fly „Economy“. Business class has a much higher overall footprint.
  • Compensate your emissions with a few clicks. Either directly at the airline (e.g. Ryanair provides that checkbox) or at compensation services (e.g. Atmosfair - find link below)
  • At least get to / from the airport by public transport instead of Taxi / Car.

12 - CRUISE SHIP: Let’s not even discuss the carbon footprint of that! JUST NEVER GO ON ANY TRIP ON A CRUISE SHIP AROUND VALENCIA OR ANYWHERE ELSE! It is around 4 times (!) worse than even flying.
Not even mentioning the local emissions in harbours near beaches & cities, amount of trash, not supporting local tourism, etc… No L.O.V.E. here...

So in summary, here is the prioritized order I use when I ask my self how to get somewhere:
  1. walking
  2. VALENBISI
  3. eKickScooter
  4. eScooter
  5. Bus/Metro/Train/Sailing/Ferry
  6. BlaBlaCar
  7. EcoTaxi
  8. Friend’s / shared / rental car
  9. CO2-compensated flight

To get a better idea how the different modes of transport rank, see the following detailed chart. In case you want to compare your specific trip from A to B regarding the emissions, time & cost - check out the apps & websites below.

    1. Hello Jürgen, thanks for your comment. As the mentioned graphics only states the local CO2 emissions, I assume they are both 0 - so no one is first 😉 (I didn’t create the chart, so you might have to ask the source behind the link).
Helicopters indeed are very convenient, but are barely available and their footprint is far worse than all the other mentioned modes of transport. (just like jetskis, jetpacks, etc... so didn’t As soon as electrical (self-flying) inner-City drones like e.g. Volocopter are available in VAL, I will of course add them.
